Welcome to Govt Sanskrit College, Thiruvananthapuram, a venerable institution with a rich heritage dating back to its founding in 1889 by the illustrious ruler, Sri Mulam Thirunal Rama Varma. After being inspired by his visit to Banaras, where he witnessed the academic excellence of the Sanskrit Colleges, the Maharaja of Travancore invited renowned scholars from all over India to establish a similar institution in his kingdom. The college was initially situated within the Fort area at Mitranandapuram and enjoyed royal patronage for thirty-five years, during which it flourished.
During the reign of Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma, Govt Sanskrit College witnessed a period of expansion, culminating in the construction of a purpose-built facility by the Government. In 1947, recognising the institution’s significance, the Government bestowed it with the status of a full-fledged First Degree College and instituted necessary reforms. Today, with a legacy spanning over a century and a third, Govt Sanskrit College stands as a leading institution in South India, devoted to the promotion and propagation of Sanskrit studies. We invite you to explore our history, where tradition meets academic excellence, and join us in shaping the future of Sanskrit education.
